Diary footnote, accompanied by a photograph of a St. Bernard: THE ST. BERNARD. These great dogs have a romantic connection with the Hospice of St. Bernard, in the High Alps, where for centuries they have been trained by the monks to set forth in the snow to track lost wayfarers, carrying a small keg of wine on their backs (if the pictures are to be believed). Breeders in this country have been prone in the past to pay too much attention to massive heads and shoulders, so that many specimens are woefully weak in their quarters, and seem only able to shamble. The true specimen should be as powerful behind as in front.
