Diary sub-note: August to October Game Certificates expire
S.R. 6.51, S.S. 4.35
Went for a walk in the afternoon. Went to see “Madam Butterfly.” Wore my orange evening dress. Painted “David.”

Diary footnote, accompanying a photograph of a Pug: THE PUG. The Pug used to be a topical joke, being invariably depicted as overfed and asthmatical, the pampered darling of elderly spinsters. This is hardly fair to what is really a very attractive little animal when properly handled. He is amiable and affectionate, and has the best of manners in and out of the house. His ‘squash’ nose suggests the toy spaniel group, but there the resemblance ends. Colour usually fawn; muzzle and mask, black. There are also all-black varieties.
