Diary footnote, accompanying a photograph of a Newfoundland. THE NEWFOUNDLAND. He sprang into popularity in 1830, when Sir Edwin Landseer painted the famous picture “A Member of the Humane Society.” Known in his native country for countless generations, his stock is responsible for the Labrador and flat-coated retriever. Dignified and benevolent, he is a good water dog, and has gained a reputation for life saving. There are two varieties, the Greater and Lesser. Colouring usually all black or may be black and white.
