Diary sub-note: 1834. Coleridge, poet, died
S.R. 5.12, S.S. 8.59
Started to throw away my lesson books. We played 3 matches of a match against Beaufort. They beat us 5-4 games.

Diary footnote, accompanying a photograph of an Irish Wolfhound: IRISH WOLFHOUND. The specimens of the present day are ‘revivals,’ or reconstructions of the ancient breed that grew obsolete with the disappearance of the wolf. He has probably been manufactured by recourse to the Scottish Deerhound (q.v.) in conjunction with the Mastiff. He is the giant of the Dog World, standing 35 inches, or more, at the shoulder, and his appearance is imposing. He is gentle and affectionate by nature.
