Diary footnote, accompanying a photograph of a Golden Retriever: THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER. These very handsome dogs are a recent innovation, and have gained rapid popularity. The basis of the strain is the flat coated, black retriever crossed with the yellow Russian retriever, and probably the setter. Heavier built than the flat coated variety, they have now won a reputation of steady and persevering gun-dogs, though at one time looked at askance, from the working point of view.
