Diary sub-note: 1915. Italy declared war on Austria
S.R. 4.57, S.S. 8.56
It rained all day. I didn’t ride. Ronny, Tish, Stephen, Tinker & I went down to the village in the afternoon. Simon got up & came down.

Diary footnote, accompanying a photograph of a Dachshund: THE DACHSHUND. Known in parts of Germany as ‘the lesser Basset.’ Comparison will show a marked resemblance, save that he is usually ‘whole coloured,’ black, tan or brown, whereas the Basset has hound markings. He has a wonderful nose and is a great digger, shovelling aside the earth in the most determined manner with his crooked legs. He is of a lovable disposition and makes an attractive companion.
