Diary footnote, accompanying a photograph of a Dalmatian: The Dalmation: Related to the Pointer, he is popularly known as the Carriage Dog, though his job of running behind coaches and carriage-and-pairs has long since departed. His handsome appearance and charming disposition still ensure his popularity, and he has retained his love of horses. His build is peculiarly suited to running long distances, and good feet and legs are essential show points. The spots are usually black, though they may be liver or lemon. Puppies are born white.
